So, yeah, this seems to be a quality instrument and good value for the money. After a little gentle jiggering with pliers I got the cog to stay in the grooves but now I'm wondering if this will cause me any trouble in the future. Looking at the back of the instrument it appears that the teeth of the cog for the tuning post were coming out of the grooves of the tuning screw. I know this wasn't due to overtensioning the string since even at its highest pitch before the pop I was still about 40 Hz flat. As I was tuning my bottom e-string the tuning peg would become difficult to turn and eventually there'd be a pop and it could turn again. The last problem is due particularly to my instrument.
