Looking at the back of the instrument it appears that the teeth of the cog for the tuning post were coming out of the grooves of the tuning screw. I know this wasn't due to overtensioning the string since even at its highest pitch before the pop I was still about 40 Hz flat. As I was tuning my bottom e-string the tuning peg would become difficult to turn and eventually there'd be a pop and it could turn again. The last problem is due particularly to my instrument.
